That Poop Story

Friday at speech Brian and Ms. Kathy were reading a story about a snake who caught some mice in a jar.  Brian kept referring to the jar as the "poop jar."  This made me realize that I still hadn't shared our most recent poop story with those who read my blog!

Probably over a month ago now, Brian was having a terrible potty day.  We had already cleaned up more than one pee accident.  Then he pooped his pants.  Right in front of us, standing in the living room.  I was just done.  I told Shawn he had to deal with it.

Brian stripped as he typically does when he's had an accident.  (That's usually how we know he's done it!)  Shawn picked up his clothing and led him upstairs to get cleaned up.  I was doing what I am doing right now...typing on my computer, and Lilah was playing on the floor.

I realized I was still smelling the poop, so I looked up from the screen to see if Lilah had dirtied her diaper.  No, nope, that wasn't it.  Not even close.  Lilah had FOUND SOME OF BRIAN'S POOP that Shawn missed.  She had it in her hands.  And on her forehead.  She was having a ball mashing it around.

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That's exactly what I screamed as I grabbed the child and took off running up the stairs.  Poor Shawn was standing at the top frozen with a look of complete horror on his face.  "Move.  Get out of the way,"  I shouted as Lilah wiped Brian's poop all over the back of my shirt.

I put her on the changing table and started trying to remove the poop with wipes.  No dice. It was even UNDER HER FINGERNAILS.  Oh my gross!  I realized she would have to be bathed.  I stripped her down to her diaper.  I headed for the tub.  I got the water going and pulled off her diaper.

Plop!  I put her in the tub only seconds before I realized SHE HAD ALSO POOPED.  So here was my 8 month old daughter, sitting in the tub in a clump of her own poop, covered in her brother's poop.

Mom of the Year.

I looked at Shawn and said, "Seriously, how did this become our life?  I have never seen so much SH*T in my life!"

It took two baths and lots of laundry, but the smell finally evacuated our home and my sweet little baby  Ah, memories!

U-6

I mentioned yesterday that Brian has joined a spring soccer team. He is in the U-6 league, which means he is one of the youngest players. We've only had one practice/scrimmage so far, but he is excited to go back this week. It's for an hour once a week-they practice for half of the time and then scrimmage for the second half hour. The season lasts 6 weeks. Hopefully, he will get a little bit more focused by the end of the 6 weeks, but if not, there's always next season!
And with that, my friends, this blog is officially up to date. Thankyouverymuch!!

Siblings Love

Brian just loves to hold Lilah! Luckily, she adores him, so she puts up with the strangling...ahem...holding, which means I get good pictures of the two of them!

Brian has also been really into his play doctor bag lately. His favorite patient is, of course, his baby sis.
Oh boy, she's gonna get him someday!!

Easter 2012

Easter 2012...Lilah in a pretty yellow dress...hating life because it kept her from crawling properly.

Brian in a handsome hat...that boy loves his hats!
A bunny at the mall.
Church in our very own pew that Nana bought at the festival last year.

Brunch with my family.

Lots of egg hunts...even an adult one on Holy Saturday!! What a fun time.
Dinner with Shawn's family.

Goats, of course!

A baby dinosaur! Sweet Uncle Billy captured a baby dinosaur (newt) for Brian. After Brian got to hold it, they took it back outside so it could find it's Mommy!

Babies a plenty!

Too much fun.
(I must note that Brian had stuffed several of his Cars in his hat before placing it on his head. They kept falling out and waking him up as we drove :)

Lilah, 9 Months

Well, Miss Lilah, it happened. You turned 9 months old. Now all I can think about is that first birthday looming just around the corner.

This month brought lots of changes. You are completely mobile now. You crawl anywhere you want to go. You pull up on everything. You cruise. You have two precious little teeth! You have surpassed the meats in 2nd foods and we are onto 3rd foods. You will literally eat anything. You really love Gerber puffs and little chunks of real bananas! You are a bit confused by the chunks in 3rd foods, but I think you will get it soon enough.

You are babbling ma ma ma and nana nana nana quite a bit. Please start with the da da das soon! Your Daddy is dying to hear it.

I call you "the beast" because you are into everything! You have no regard for your own personal safety or the organization of anything you wish to tear apart. You are still kinda sensitive though and can definitely turn on the tears. You are well aware that if you cry while Brian is near you, you get picked up and he gets in trouble. You still love that boy so much though! I love to listen to the two of you blowing raspberries at one another and crack yourselves up.

We still get stopped everywhere we go with you. You have picked up on this too and get quite offended if people don't notice you. I keep telling you that not everyone is programmed to pay sole attention to you, but you just don't understand!

You are growing like a weed! It's funny because you are big according to percentiles, but people often think you are younger than you are because you still have very little hair. It's coming along, but very slowly!! You even graduated to your big girl car seat last week. No more infant carrier!

Your 9 months stats are as follows:

Weight: 20 lbs 3.8 oz (75th percentile)
Height: 28.5 inches (85th percentile)
Head: 17 inches according to new nurse, I remeasured and got 18 inches...so we'll go with 18!

And your monthly chair pic...

And a little bonus. The teaser pics from your 9 month shoot last night!!

Before My Eyes

Brian has turned many corners recently right before my eyes. It's especially nice when someone who doesn't see him often makes a comment about his speech or his behavior - and how much both have improved. It gives me perspective and helps me to see how far he's come.

His speech therapist, Kathy, couldn't more thrilled with the progress he's making. She says she doesn't even want to comment on the things he's not picked up on yet, since she knows where he has been. It occurred to me the other day that she didn't even know what Brian's "monkey speak" was since it's been so long since he's done that. You know, when he used to pretend he was Curious George and used "oo-oo, ah-ah" for every word? Kathy has only been his therapist since December, so she never heard it!

I remember thinking last December that all I really wanted was to have a conversation with Brian. I was just desperate to really be able to talk him. I can do that now. They aren't always the most enlightening or lengthy chats, but they are in fact, conversations. It's so exciting to hear him shout from the back seat of the car, "Mama! Look, it's a tractor!" He is noticing so much more about his world than he used to. Or at least now he has the communication skills to tell me all about what he's noticing.

Brian even got into trouble last week at school for talking! Something we never thought would happen. His teacher said she was shocked when she realized it was Brian making all that chatter.

One thing that his speech therapy has certainly improved is his arguing skills. If I say, "Brian, we're going to the doctor today." He'll reply with something like, "No go to the doctor. The doctor is closed!" I'll say back, "No bud, I am pretty sure they are open." And he'll say, "No, not open, doctor is closed. Let's go to the animal zoo." Most days this is hilarious. Most days.

OT has been a tremendous help to Brian as well. He ate a HOTDOG at OT last week. It was the most meat he had ever eaten IN HIS LIFE. He continued the trend by sampling a burger and some chicken that night and has eaten a hotdog almost everyday since. He is also eating small bites of apples now. Emily, the OT even got him to pedal his bike last week. He was so proud!

Potty training (knock on wood) seems to be a success for the most part, finally. Even #2, which is so nice!! I was getting really tired of cleaning up that mess. He is very proud of this accomplishment as well.

It's just nice to see him taking pride in himself.

I started using a picture chart like Brian uses at speech therapy and at school. It's just a bunch of picture cards with velcro on them that we attach to a line of velcro so he knows the schedule for the day. When we finish a task, he moves it to another strip of velcro which represents "all done." I started using it over spring break just to see how he would react to it. My plan was to try it for a week and bring it back for summer. I didn't count on him absolutely loving it! I've had to add a few pictures to accommodate our current schedule-school, swimming, soccer- because Brian requires me to fill the picture chart every single day. Like I said he loves it and I think it's because it helps him prepare for the next thing. We usually have big melt downs with every transition, and not so much with the schedule. He loves getting to move each piece to "all done" and thus, he's ready to move on when I say it's time. It's been wonderful!

As mentioned above, we started soccer and swim lessons last week too. Soccer was not the best, but it could have been (and 6 months ago would have been) much worse. He's definitely the kid who is distracted by all the grass and dirt. He doesn't follow all directions given by the coach. BUT he stayed on his field (there were 4 others he could have run to, not to mention a playground). He kicked the ball some. He ran with the other kids mostly. He had fun. And thankfully, his coach is one of our best friend's brothers. And he is an incredibly patient man. Thank God.

Swim lessons were a success! Brian impressed the instructor and me with his skills and attention to detail. I was so happy to see him shine!

Brian can be a lot to handle some days. Other days, he's just like any other 3 (almost 4) year old. I have learned a great deal of patience from being his mom. I have learned to take pride in little victories and to celebrate small successes. But when I look back over the course of 6 months, it becomes evident that he has made large strides and huge progress.

Love that boy.

A Fun Day at Children's

These pics have been sitting on my desktop for a long time, but I am going to put them up because I have some time and I don't have my camera to pull off the new pics!

As I already posted, both of the kids' tube surgeries went fine. Lilah was smiling like normal by the time we got to recovery. Brian was ticked off, but he was just fine, really.

We were thrown for a bit of a loop by the audiologist who did his ABR. She was pretty adamant that we need to aid him. After talking to our audiologist and our ENT who actually know Brian, I don't think we are heading down that road just yet. It looks like we will try an FM system in the classroom next fall.

That's another story, as we have been struggling with where to place him in the fall. We considered the school in our neighborhood because they have a hearing unit, which may be beneficial to Brian and to us as we make decisions for him over the next couple of years. Then I visited the school. Wow. It's big! They have four preschool classes, and his current school has only 1. This isn't that big of a deal except at common times like lunch and recess. I feel like he would be really overwhelmed.

We are meeting with our audiologist in May and will make a final decision then, but we are heavily leaning toward keeping him where he is.

Anyway, here are my babies all dressed for their surgeries!

Lilah, 8 Months

Oh my baby girl, this post is long over due. You will be (gasp!) 9 months old next week. We've been having a ball with the pretty weather though, so the blog has had to wait.

You have had such a big month. You went on your first plane ride, had your first big girl bath (of which you were not particularly fond of) met your great grandma and Pappy's side of the family, you got your first TWO teeth, you are crawling...oh my how you are crawling, you can pull up, you're cruising and plusalso....you are the cutest baby girl there ever was!

Your crawling definitely started as an army crawl. You were so good at it, we didn't think you'd ever get up on all fours. But you did. Yesterday I saw you bear crawl. Today I watched you go up a step and almost two. You get where you want to go for sure!

Pulling up is not at mastery level yet. You can do it sometimes, but not on every time, which makes you mad! You can cruise and transfer from place to place, or place to person effortlessly. You are so big!

I was scared that you wouldn't look like a baby anymore with your new teeth, but boy are the cute! I think those two top ones are on their way too. You have been screaming your wild animal scream a lot the last few days. I think it's your pain scream. Poor baby!

It is ridiculous how many times a day I get stopped by strangers because you are so cute. First they notice your red hair. Then they see how blue your eyes are. And then you smile and they are stuck. Those dimples are just the icing on the cake, baby girl!

You are also giving kisses now. Love those big, open mouth baby kisses. Your big brother wipes off my kisses now. Punk! But not you, you love mama kisses.

We just love you so much Lilah Lou. Here are your 8 month chair pictures. You did not make this easy for mama by the way!!
