Potty Training?

Two things happened this week that made me wonder if Brian is ready for potty training.

First, on Tuesday, I walked into his room and nearly stepped in a wet diaper. My initial thought was that Brian had removed it from the trashcan and placed it on the floor for me find. Wrong. It took me a few seconds to figure out where the wet diaper had come from. When I realized it had come off of my child, I was pretty amazed seeing as he was still wearing his shorts. Taking the diaper off with the clothes still on...now that's talent!

Then on Wednesday we were at the preschool for the first 4 year old play date. At one point I realized that in the chaos of talking to the many, many parents and making sure my teachers had what they needed, I had lost my child. Good parenting...I know. I mean there were plenty of adults around, but I probably should have been keeping track of my 14 month old. Not to worry. Do you know where I found him? Toddling into the boys bathroom behind the 4 year old boys. Apparently it was time for a potty break and Brian went right along with his new friends.

I'm just saying...

Raising a Boy

There are many things no one tells you about becoming a parent. Many things you cannot be prepared for, no matter how much advise is passed down to you, or how many books you read. A friend of my mom's always says, "boys are great." And they are. But boy do they make your heart stop at least once a day. And boy do they give you premature gray hair! Here are some things I wish I would known and truly understood before becoming the mother of a little boy...

* They get hurt. A Lot. Their faces and knees are rarely without injury. So many injuries, in fact, that you often wonder when social services is coming to cart you away.

* They have no fear. Absolutely none. They attempt crazy stunts daily, usually more often really. They stack things and climb. Use kitchen drawers as stairs. Harass animals and laugh hysterically. Play balance beam on the stairs. And much, much more.

* A baby penis is a tricky little thing. Often used as a weapon, you have to be on guard from day one to avoid getting sprayed, or having to clean up spray. When they are very young, you have to "train" it to spray down into the diaper, rather than up. If you don't, many, many night garments get soaked. Even if you do, many, many night garments get soaked. And don't even get me started on what you have to do to keep the circumcised skin from "growing back." Are you kidding me?

* Boys are super sweet. I always knew little girls were sweet, but this baby trumps all. He gives kisses (wet, open mouthed kisses at that) out of nowhere. Just because. He blows kisses too. And I love the way he rubs my arm when he's sleepy. Super sweet.

* They love their mama. After being blessed with my little man, I truly understand the term "mama's boy."

A Drunken Monkey

Jen called me out on my lack of blogs recently. Thanks, Jen!

Truth is, I have been busy. Preschool starts up after Labor Day and so does CCD which means my computer time is limited to reading and responding to email and working on the new St. Pat's website.

However, I realized I had better get blogging so everyone can be entertained by all of Brian's new antics :) What's he been up to? Really, what HASN'T he been up to. He's walking all over now. He's making the funniest face. I have yet to capture it on camera, but it's a funny one.

He's eating more. Not a lot, but more. He likes strawberry and mixed berry applesauce! He loves vanilla wafers, gold fish and cucumbers. He still won't touch meat.

He walks to the bathroom when it's bath time. Sometimes we have to ask him if he's ready to take a bath, and then he goes. Sometimes, he just goes on his own. He feeds us bites of whatever he is eating. Sometimes after he has "softened" it for us. Yum!

He loves to dance. We got him a baby MP3 player. The same one I bought for our niece, Renie. He loves it just like she did.

We're back at the Bantas now, so he's thoroughly enjoying the attention of the high schoolers. I think he misses Max, but we will see him tomorrow, so that will make it better. He LOVES waving goodbye to Daddy in the morning out the window. When we get up in time. We've slept in the last two mornings. Speaking of sleeping-it's going better too. Some nights he sleeps 12 hours! Heaven on earth!!

Pre-season football has begun. He still likes football. He would sit and watch it when he was younger totally entranced. He still does.

The walking is the best part though. Shawn calls him his "little drunken monkey." And that's pretty much what he looks like as he toddles around. Our little drunken monkey.

Walk This Way

I finally figured out how to post a video on here. It turns out you just have to try ;) I thought you might enjoy seeing the walking. This was hard to get because he kept walking AWAY from the camera. So it's not great, but it will do. Notice how he stops to check out the score of the Bengals game before making his second escape attempt. I think he's babbling about Chad Ochocinco kicking extra points! What in the world?!

What Determination Looks Like

And this my friends is Brian's new favorite facial expression. At the moment this picture was taken, he was determined to run me over with this push toy. Thank you, Bentleys for the wonderful gift! This is a new favorite game. Chasing Mommy with the push toy. He makes this face until I scream and run, at which point he squeals with delight. Another new favorite is using this toy to run circles around the house and beating it against anything that may be in his path. Still another new game that involves the push toy is hide and seek. We must hide and he runs around frantically while pushing the toy "seeking" us.

The best part of all of this is it's wearing our little guy out! We started the bath routine around 8:30 tonight in hopes that he'll go to bed before 10. Shawn's still in there rocking, so the verdict is out on that one. Good night :)

Pompilios

Today we had the pleasure of dining at Pompilios with two of my high school friends, Jen and Maureen, and Maureen's new baby boy, Ben. Brian LOVED Jen! In case you don't recall, Jen is the friend whose boyfriend (I KID YOU NOT JEN I ALMOST TYPED HUSBAND JUST NOW-WOW, DON'T TELL JOSH) taught Brian to blow raspberries. I feel that Brian's assault of Jen's teeth at lunch was karma for Josh's actions :)

Isn't baby Ben SOOO cute?!

You WILL eat goldfish Jen!

Lorakeet Landing

Last Saturday we headed to the Zoo for another day of adventures. I'm being honest when I say that I mustered up all of my courage to enter the Lorakeet Landing with the camera in order to capture the following photos. For those of you not familiar with this fabulous Zoo feature, Lorakeet Landing is a enclosed area where you can purchase food and nectar to feed the 40 lorakeets flying around.

Anyway, I nearly wet my pants every time Brian came into contact with one of these miserable little creatures, and especially when they landed on my baby's head. Did I mention that I am NOT a bird fan? I hate them actually. They are vile, vicious animals that poop on the heads of unsuspecting baseball fans. But, for my sweet little Brian, I do things I would not have thought possible. Keep in mind that Brian had rubbed sunscreen into his left eye right before entering, so the pictures are not fabulous of him. Also notice that one of the birds felt Shawn's ear needed to be cleaned out. Shawn was quite entertained.
